This year, Congress is expected to vote on legislation that will increase energy costs for families and businesses. Preserving a clean environment is important to us and future generations, but so is economic stability. North Carolina’s electric cooperatives are communicating with the state’s elected officials in Washington D.C. the importance of finding a balanced solution to our energy needs - one that achieves real environmental goals without draining family budgets or further harming the economy. North Carolina’s electric cooperatives are also working to meet a state-mandated Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard (REPS) passed by the state legislature in August of 2007. The REPS is intended to promote the development of renewable resources and energy efficiency programs. North Carolina’s electric cooperatives serve more than 2.5 million people across the state in 93 of the state’s 100 counties. The 26 cooperatives are private, independent and not-for-profit entities that have long supported responsible stewardship of the environment. |
